The Centre is planning to develop a Rs 12,000-crore inland waterway on the Brahmani river in Odisha which would enable the smooth movement of goods from four industrial clusters to Paradip and Dhamra ports
Under the proposed plan, the infrastructure component will be undertaken by the government using the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) model. This will be implemented through the creation of a special purpose vehicle (SPV) between Coal India (CIL), Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), Paradip Port and the Odisha government to develop the infrastructure required to operationalise the National Waterway-five (NW5)
The respective company boards have given their in-principle approval to form the SPV. Further, the project will require funding support from the central government, especially in dredging, and in navigational locks which would help to control depth differences
Presently one million tpa of cargo is moved on NW5, and is projected to touch 12-14 million tpa by 2030. The SPV partners' investment contribution will correspond to the shareholding pattern of the entity
